Cortejo de Despedida - “Goodbye Parade”

“Cortejo de Despedida” is a series of carnival banners that humorously and ironically narrate the process of a romantic breakup. Drawing on the dystopian tales of modern relationships, the phrases form an inverted carnival bloc — one that celebrates the pain of love in contemporary times.

The nine banners that make up the series first came to life on the streets of São Paulo, marching alongside the carnival group Fanfarra Manada. The debut performance made a strong impact in July 2022. In its second appearance, in February 2023, the project joined forces with the energetic Bloco Calor da Rua, led by the band Francisco El Hombre, in the heart of downtown São Paulo.

Direct interaction with the public is a core pillar of this artistic proposal. This dynamic ensures that the messages inscribed on the banners are interpreted and recognized by all, generating a rich dialogue between the artwork and its spectators. Presenting the performance in the streets, among the people, is an expression of the cortege’s very spirit — where art is not only observed but lived and shared by everyone present.

The exhibition of the banners functions as a remnant of the street performance, a record of a happening, reaching audiences beyond the Carnival revelers. Through this exhibition format, spectators are transported to the festive moment so they too — just like the streets — can bear witness to what transpired.
